Gosh the final espisodes of the great queen seon deok moves me so much to tears. This is one great drama with so much heart. Having watched many american, hollywood, china and taiwan movies and dramas previously, I was utterly shocked by the skills and wisdom of the storytellers behind the great queen seon deok. The directors and screenwriters behind this great drama are simply amazing; they have such indepth understanding of human desires, human emotions and human nature, and this is something i have rarely seen in other movies and dramas.

When the great Mishil passed away, sitting on that chair that looks like a throne, I was moved to tears too.

Strange.

Usually if you see a ‘BAD’ person or an enemy died, you would be overwhelmed with joy for all the good people.

In other dramas and movies, there is a distinct difference between all the good people and bad people, when all the so called ‘BAD’ people died in the dramas, you would jump for joy, perhaps crying with tears of happiness! Because that is the way it is, the directors and screenwriters, or most people separate the bad people from the good people very clearly. But in the Great Queen Seon Deok, when you see the so-called villian ‘the great mishil‘ died, I believe most would cry for her. I know I did.

And this time round, when Bidam died, I was so sad for him, that this ‘feeling’ of sadness went on for weeks!!!

I think this is why so many of the korean dramas are special (not everyone of them of course, just that few special ones). The bad ones are not the absolute ‘bad’, the good ones are not necessary the absolute ‘good’. There are goodness in the bad ones, and there are ‘badness’ in the good ones (yin-yang??) Wow! In reality, in real life, I have always believed that there is nothing that are absolutes in this world. There is yin within the yang, and within yang you will find the yin. If you know of any bad people in your life, you know what, they are not toally bad in the first place, there are always ‘hidden’ reasons why they are bad, or why they turn bad.

It is almost always true. Your best teacher in life is most often than not whom you consider as your enemy, or the one you consider dislike most! Bad experiences in life make you stronger and wiser.

The cool thing about watching Queen Seon Deok is, you can read a lot of meanings out of each espisode. Of course, it depends on your own interpretations. The drama has some cool parenting advice to a lot of parents out there too! (LOL)

A lot of people out there love the character of “Bidam” in the drama. Most of us know that he is not going to get a good ending in this drama. He is a pathetic character. His si-fu (master) Lord Munno brings him up just like his own son, and really cares about him, his education and his future. But Munno brings him up almost the wrong way. Munno brings him up with a motive – wanting him to get strong, become stronger and one day return to the palace, possibly marry Princess Deokman and becomes King. So, in the process, Munno has huge expectations from Bidam.

Compare Munno to Sowa (princess doekman’s nanny/foster mother). Upon orders from the King himself, Sowa takes doekman to a faraway place in the desert. She too raises Deokman like her own daughter, but without any motives. She does not even dream of returning to the palace with Deokman one day! Because Sowa is not striving for an outcome, a motive, she raises Deokman just with love and care. And even with just this, Deokman cannot escape her destiny in the end – to become the great Queen Seon Deok. And what a great Queen Seon Deok she is!!!

How many parents of today raise their kids with some kinds of inner motives deep inside them?? They set goals for their children. They want their children to accomplish more. They dream of dreams wanting their children to fulfil them. Yep, I know, it is not easy. Being good parents is always not easy.

These strong women are rebellious, but what attracts me to them is their relentless drive to pursue their dreams and passions, as well as having a heart that is ‘as big as the ocean’!

Strong women – Queen Seon Deok and Empress Feng

While watching Queen Seon Deok, it reminds me of the Chinese drama Empress Feng of the Northern Wei Dynasty – a similarly strong woman just like Queen Seon Deok. Initially I was attracted to this drama because I heard they had Hua Mu Lan the legendary heroine in the story as well, but then the story is about Empress Feng as the female lead character, and as I began watching the drama, I was amazed by Empress Feng’s wisdom and strength, and how she overcame all difficulties and obstacles for the sake of her people. I really admire her heart, as big as the ocean (just like Queen Seon Deok), and she too has the qualities, wisdom and strength to become ‘king’ of her times. The story of empress Feng is very touching, and unlike other chinese history dramas, it is not boring, and the pacing just right. Get the DVDs with english subtitles if you are interested too!

Really love those dramas with certain or all parts of the stories with crossdressing themes, they are just so funny, and even better if these stories are highly motivating as well. These are our top 5 favorites! Really admire the strength and wisdom of the main female charaters in these dramas, who often teach us to persevere to succeed, while enjoying the journey. Seriously, it is only through failure and obstacles that we will know what success is like.
