The cool thing about watching Queen Seon Deok is, you can read a lot of meanings out of each espisode. Of course, it depends on your own interpretations. The drama has some cool parenting advice to a lot of parents out there too! (LOL)
A lot of people out there love the character of “Bidam” in the drama. Most of us know that he is not going to get a good ending in this drama. He is a pathetic character. His si-fu (master) Lord Munno brings him up just like his own son, and really cares about him, his education and his future. But Munno brings him up almost the wrong way. Munno brings him up with a motive – wanting him to get strong, become stronger and one day return to the palace, possibly marry Princess Deokman and becomes King. So, in the process, Munno has huge expectations from Bidam.
Compare Munno to Sowa (princess doekman’s nanny/foster mother). Upon orders from the King himself, Sowa takes doekman to a faraway place in the desert. She too raises Deokman like her own daughter, but without any motives. She does not even dream of returning to the palace with Deokman one day! Because Sowa is not striving for an outcome, a motive, she raises Deokman just with love and care. And even with just this, Deokman cannot escape her destiny in the end – to become the great Queen Seon Deok. And what a great Queen Seon Deok she is!!!
How many parents of today raise their kids with some kinds of inner motives deep inside them?? They set goals for their children. They want their children to accomplish more. They dream of dreams wanting their children to fulfil them. Yep, I know, it is not easy. Being good parents is always not easy.
